Volunteer Spotlight: Julia Harrison, Holland & Knight LLP

What inspired you to become an Attorney Ad Litem volunteer with Crossroads For Florida Kids?
I was inspired to become an Attorney Ad Litem volunteer with Crossroads For Florida Kids by a desire to have a direct and meaningful impact on vulnerable children. In my day-to-day practice, a significant portion of my work is transactional and involves complex deal structures, but it can feel somewhat removed from individuals whose lives are immediately affected by legal advocacy. Serving as an Attorney Ad Litem provides an opportunity to step into a very different role where my work has a direct and personal impact on a child’s well-being and future. These are children who are navigating incredibly difficult and often unstable circumstances, and having someone focused on representing their best interests can be critical. The ability to provide that consistency and voice for a child is what motivated me to get involved.
Can you share a meaningful moment or experience from your time as a volunteer that has stayed with you?
One of the most meaningful moments from my time as an Attorney Ad Litem volunteer was seeing one of my clients graduate from the mental health court program. The court held a small ceremony for her, where she was recognized for the significant progress she had made, took a photo with the judge, and had the opportunity to reflect on how far she had come. Having worked with her through some very difficult circumstances, it was incredibly rewarding to see her reach that point of stability and confidence.
What would you say to someone considering becoming an Attorney Ad Litem volunteer?
I would encourage anyone considering becoming an Attorney Ad Litem volunteer to take the opportunity. You are often serving as one of the few consistent advocates in a child’s life, which is a very important role. You get a chance to help children navigate difficult situations, ensure that their voice is heard and help set them up for success in the future. You also do not need to have experience in family law or courtroom practice to be an effective advocate. Crossroads provides great support throughout your representation and many skills you already possess as an attorney, such as listening to and advocating for your client, apply directly. Not only is it extremely rewarding to make a positive impact on a child’s life, but it is also a great chance to learn and grow as an attorney.
Where is your favorite place you’ve traveled to, or if you haven’t been there yet, where is at the top of your list and why?
I don’t have an absolute favorite because most places I’ve been to are great in their own way. Portugal was my most recent trip and it was fantastic. If you are willing to travel to a few different spots, you can get your fill of the beach, rolling vineyards and city life all within pretty close proximity.
