Volunteer Spotlight: Lucie Fisher, Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP

1. What inspired you to become an Attorney Ad Litem volunteer with Crossroads For Florida Kids?

I was inspired to become an AAL for Crossroads after being introduced to the opportunity by my wonderful coworkers at Bradley, Jacob Hanson and Ryan Hedstrom. Hearing about the impact of their work from colleagues I respect made the need feel immediate and personal. I also wanted to find a meaningful way to support and complement the tireless work of public defenders.

Growing up with two lawyer parents who devoted their careers to public interest law, I saw firsthand how critical advocacy is for individuals who often have the least power and the greatest need. Serving as an AAL felt like a natural extension of those values and a concrete way to help ensure children’s voices are heard and protected. Finally, once I met Scott and Rosemary and learned more about Crossroads’ mission, I was completely hooked.

2. Can you share a meaningful moment or experience from your time as a volunteer that has stayed with you? (No identifying details needed).

One of the most meaningful aspects of my volunteer experience has been serving on-call. Those moments have been some of the most powerful because the children truly appreciate you showing up for them when they don’t have another consistent guardian to advocate solely for them in a foreign setting. Being able to step into that role, even briefly, and ensure that a child’s interests are represented has stayed with me. I’ve also found it especially meaningful to work alongside and meet dedicated attorneys and court personnel whom I might not have had the opportunity to collaborate with.

3. What would you say to someone considering becoming an Attorney Ad Litem volunteer?

I would tell them: do it! The experience of serving as an AAL can be tailored to your availability and interests. Whether you are able to commit to an extended representation or prefer to serve on-call, there is a meaningful way for everyone to contribute. Even limited involvement can make a real difference in a child’s life. At bottom, it’s impactful, manageable, and incredibly rewarding work.
