Volunteer Spotlight: Alex Mendez, Shrader Mendez

alex-mendez-square

What inspired you to become an Attorney Ad Litem volunteer with Crossroads For Florida Kids?

I wanted to become an AAL to help kids that don’t have the support throughout the legal system and legal process. It is important that children or young adults have support both legally as well as personally.

Can you share a meaningful moment or experience from your time as a volunteer that has stayed with you? (No identifying details needed).

I have had the privilege to work with many children and young adults.  Fortunately, I have been able to provide opportunities and outlets for multiple children and young adults while being an AAL.

What would you say to someone considering becoming an Attorney Ad Litem volunteer?

It is extremely rewarding to be an AAL. Initially, you may feel that you are not going to have an impact on the child or young adult’s life but when you are able to connect with them, it is a great feeling.

Where is your favorite place you’ve traveled to, or if you haven’t been there yet, where is at the top of your list and why?

Favorite place I have traveled was Germany and Switzerland. I went on my honeymoon there and both places were super enjoyable. It was great to celebrate the new years and skiing was great.

If you had to teach a 5-minute class on anything you love, what would the topic be?

If I had to teach a 5 minute class, it would be great to talk to incoming law students and discuss how the daily practice of law is completely different than law school and the academia behind it.

What’s a small opinion you will defend with your whole heart (best French fry shape, best pen, is a hotdog a sandwich, etc.)?

Michael Jordan is the best ever and Lebron James is not even a close second.
